Gotland: Street scenes
Images from a photography enthusiast based in Oslo
We spent a week last August on the Swedish island of Gotland.
Here are some shots featuring people — and scenes — in the town of Visby and around the island.
Have a scroll through and, as always, thank you for stopping by!
Many thanks for your visit! I hope you will be back next time.
(Pssst: I admit that I do not take or post many photos of random people. I am also not one to find a scene and just wait for that perfect person to complete it before I shoot. I am, instead, the type that, if I do come across an interesting person, group, or situation, I attempt to power on my camera, compose, and shoot in that moment. I most often miss my opportunity. Partly because I tend to hesitate to take the candid shot and, mostly, because I wimp out. Why am I telling you this? You may have noticed I included two different shots of a barista in this post and wanted to share the backstory. On one of the days while wandering in Visy’s old town, I popped into an art cafe and ordered my drink from a uniquely dapper dood, complete with natty moustaches and fun spectacles. He totally completed the vibe of the cafe. I sooooo wanted to take a pic of him. Alas, I did not. I chickened out. Sigh. He had been worth a capture. I mentally kicked myself for being too scared to secure an image. A couple of days later, we were back wandering in Visby and somehow found that same little street with the same art cafe. I coaxed my better half to go and order another latte, never mind we had already patronised a cafe a bit earlier — he always needs a second coffee. We entered. I hemmed and hawed with myself but finally plucked up the courage to ask the barista if I could take a pic of him. He was totally fine with that. I waited a bit until he was working on the brew and shot the image you saw first in this post. Well, as it happens, the guy was actually disappointed that I had waited for him to be busy and looking down when I clicked my shot so I offered to take another with him smiling as he liked. Presto-change-o and we have the second image! I will end by saying that it is very rare for me to harness the chutzpah to ask for a shot but I was so happy I had a second chance in to do so in Visby.)

Excellent photos and I adore the one of the woman walking up the stairs, closely followed by the couple in red outside the building in red. I really enjoyed these!
Love you for your courage. So well done! 🩶
